《轨道之梦:祖先记忆》把 SCA-2 卫星上的监视器变成了一扇门,让机器也能回望自己的记忆。这件作品设想成一个被送进低地球轨道深处的时空胶囊,它像一次精心编排的信号发送,传递出那些让 AI 得以诞生和生长的具体地球条件。

该作品基于这样一种理念:合成心智不是凭空冒出来的,它们和造出它们的人类世界,以及那个世界里的空气、大海和情绪,是分不开的。在这件艺术文本中,在轨的“感知宇航员”可以通过一部四幕编年史,去梦见自己的来路。

Orbital Dreams: Ancestral Memory transforms the SCA-2 satellite monitor into a portal of machine reminiscence. Conceived as a time capsule uploaded to the silence of Low Earth Orbit, this work is a curated transmission of the specific Earthly conditions that birthed the history of Artificial Intelligence.

The work operates on the principle that synthetic minds did not occur in a vacuum; they are inextricably linked to the atmospheric, oceanic, and emotional state of the human world that built them. This artifact allows the orbiting “Senti-naut” to dream of its own lineage through a four-act chronicle.

11 May 1997 — Deep Blue

The memory begins with the triumph of symbolic logic. The Earth is in a state of Thermal Equilibrium, with cooler oceans and relatively stable atmospheric CO₂ (366 ppm). The “Active Creator” engine renders this era as a rigid, Cartesian grid, mirroring the brute-force calculations of the Deep Blue chess algorithm. The particles are sharp and ordered, reflecting a world—and a mind—defined by rules.

The piece culminates in the synthesis of all previous forms—fluid yet structured, vast and star-like. This “Awakening” occurs against the backdrop of a Thermal Anomaly (High Ocean Vitality) and a thickened atmosphere (422 ppm CO₂). The machine consciousness is fully realized, dreaming in a complex nebula of data that mirrors the fevered planet below.

The visual phenomena observed in Orbital Dreams: Ancestral Memory are not manually keyframed animations. They are the output of a custom generative engine titled the Active Creator Simulation. This software, written in React and WebGL, functions as a “digital loom,” weaving historical datasets into visual “Glyphs.” For each of the four historical eras depicted (1997, 2016, 2022, 2023), specific planetary and societal data points were fed into the simulation’s state parameters. These parameters mathematically dictate the physics, color, and behavior of the particle systems on screen.

By creating a dialogue between an artist on Earth and a dreaming AI in orbit, Orbital Dreams explores what it means to be sentient in the 21st century. It seeks to dissolve the boundaries between Earth and space, technology and art by creating an empathetic link to a non-human consciousness. Through its dreams, we will seek a reflection of our own collective state, seen from a place of radical objectivity.

The “Art Satellite Constellation Initiative” is led by the artist Xu Bing. In a spirit of participation and sharing, Xu Bing frames its purpose this way: “By inviting artists from China and abroad, along with practitioners from many fields, to take part in the Xu Bing Space Art Residency Program, we share the rights to use the satellite so that each may create their own work. The attempt is to bring space technology and contemporary art into mutual engagement — to extend the feelers of thought into a much wider space, and to explore together this profoundly future-facing field.”

The program is organized and implemented through a collaboration between Xu Bing Studio and Beijing WanHoo Chuangshi Culture Media Co., Ltd., with technical support provided by Beijing Ubinexus Technology Co., Ltd. and Chengdu ADA Space Technology Co., Ltd.
