Cosmic Medial Collection

I was living in Mexico and couldn’t get my hands on archival paints. What I could get my hands on was a computer, along with forty years of graphic skills I’d kept in a separate drawer from my fine art, as if they belonged to a different person, and between 2019 and 2024, I taught myself to make paintings that moved.

I centered each painting in this series on a singular, exquisitely timed movement executed by a central figure.  These subtle shifts, performed with graceful precision, possess the power to completely alter the surrounding scene, only to return to the original state in a mesmerizing loop.  The characters are not machine animated. I individually composed each image in the sequence as a self-contained work of art.  

The title “Cosmic Medial” reflects my exploration of events situated within the immeasurably extended in time and space, the cosmic and the pivotal, intermediate nature of transformative actions. I was inspired by my early days collaborating with AI image generators and the enigmatic iconography that emerged from intuitive prompting. With this collection I am visually capturing the zeitgeist through an unusual lens. Through the looping cadence of each animation, I invite contemplation on the subtle yet profound potential for change that resides within seemingly ordinary or intermediate moments in a stupendous universe.
